Cetacean Species

Twenty four species of cetaceans occur or have occurred in various degrees of abundance in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Black Sea. However, the species that are represented by regularly occurring, resident populations are limited to three in the Black Sea (short-beaked common dolphins, common bottlenose dolphins, and harbour porpoises), represented by distinct sub-species, and ten in the Mediterranean Sea: fin whales, sperm whales, Cuvier's beaked whales, orcas (limited to a small population found in the Strait of Gibraltar), long-finned pilot whales, Risso's dolphins, common bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, short-beaked common dolphins, and harbour porpoises (limited to portions of the Northern Aegean Sea).
All other species occur occasionally, represented by visitor or vagrant individuals from North Atlantic and Red Sea populations, and by one species, the beluga, introduced in the Black Sea from the Sea of Okhotsk in 1991.
Each species is briefly described in this web site, with a listing of its taxonomic position, the available common names in most of the Range States languages, and notes on distribution, habitat and ecology, and population data.
The list of the species occurring, or known to have occurred, in the Agreement Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea area is given below.
