Whale watching

1. Guidelines

A Working Group coordinated by Mark Simmonds has produced, during 2003, draft guidelines for commercial whale watching activities in the ACCOBAMS area. The regulation of whale watching is a complex issue, and operational procedures have to be tailored to each specific case. The guidelines should be seen as a detailed framework within which tailored tools could be developed. They also are an evolving document, to be further improved as appropriate on the basis of newly available information and experience.
A second document produced by Dr, Carole Carlson under contract from the RAC/SPA of Tunis (UNEP MAP), " A worldwide review of regulations, guidelines and codes of conduct for whale watching as a reference for the Mediterranean Sea ", is presented in the download area as an annex to the Guidelines.

2. Working Group

Until 20 November 2003 the whale watching working group was composed by Mark Simmonds (coordinator), Sabina Airoldi, Giovanni Bearzi, Pierre Beaubrun, Ana Canadas, Caterina M. Fortuna, Alexandros Frantzis, Maddalena Jahoda, Giancarlo Lauriano, Simone Panigada.
During its second meeting, the Scientific Committee considered helpful to maintain an operational working group, tasked with further elaborating and updating the guidelines.

Mark Simmonds agreed to continue to serve as chair of the Working Group, and invited all those willing to join the group to express their interest.

3. Database

A database of commercial whale watching operators in the ACCOBAMS area is posted on this website, to provide an updated source of information on whale watching operations in the region. The database is searchable.
